One of the most fearsome of all water creatures, the aquamuts are also one of the species about which the least is known. That they are sentient is guessed at, but unproven, but since a few reports have been received at the Library from reliable observers that they have been seen using primitive, untipped spears, it is guessed that they are of at least rudimentary intelligence. They have been captured, but have never lived for long once taken above water for transport to captivity.
Akwamutzi are solitary predators. They inhabit waters deep enough to swim in, and large enough to support enough fish to feed themselves. They cannot breathe above water for more than a few minutes, so they are rarely, if ever, encountered on land, although they have been known to raid small boats.
They can strike in even quite shallow waters. They raise themselves from the water to attack by furious paddling, exploding from beneath the surface, and then sink back down to breathe. This makes it easy for aquamut to disappear after a raid, but where they choose to disappear to remains a mystery. Nothing is known of how they live, or even where they live.
They attack from out of cloudy water (they may stir up the bottom to create camoflage, apparently they can see through the murk well enough), striking with overlong fingers and grabbing at opponents' heads in an attempt to pull them beneath the water to drown, then leisurely rob the corpse and perhaps consume it as well.
