Hellflowers as a species originate from Mezushai, the plane where the Rakka also originate. Whether they were deliberately seeded by the Rakka, a theory which seems unlikely given the range of the Hellflower and the limited penetrations of the Rakka into Primuz, or originated from various experiments carried out by mad magicians who had visited Mezushai and returned with the spores; remains unknown. A crown made of Hellflowers is rumored to transport the wearer to the Rakka Plane.

In appearance, the Hellflower is a small, waxen red flower, growing in a cluster of blossoms, with a dark green stem and dark red leaves. Where conditions are right, a number of Hellflowers will appear. The plant seems to prefer groves where blood has been spilled, and chill but not freezing climes.

The role of the Hellflower in dark majiks is also rumored. It is said that a Blood Potion cannot be prepared without the dark herb, and similar tales of other grim purposes to which it can be put.
